Marshall County Prosecutor Files Request to Convene Grand Jury in Several Cases

A formal request was filed by Marshall County Prosecutor Nelson Chipman and granted by Marshall County Superior Court 1 Judge Robert O. Bowen to convene a Grand Jury to review evidence and circumstances in three separate events.

The Grand Jury will convene July 13, 14, and 15 where jurors will review evidence and circumstances to determine if indictments are warranted.

One event includes the cause of the October 9, 2019 fire that resulted in the destruction of the building on the property at 415 Lakeshore Drive in Culver.

Documents show that the Grand Jury will also review evidence and circumstances in a semi-tractor trailer and passenger vehicle accident at the intersection of U.S. 6 and King Road near Bremen on February 15, 2021 that reportedly resulted in the death of 33-year-old Melia Byrer of Bremen.

Chipman also asked for the Grand Jurors to review the matter surrounding the injuries suffered by 34-year-old James Michael Shuck of Rochester who was struck by a vehicle on March 13 and died four days later, according to the report.  The accident occurred along Michigan Road north of Argos.

Chipman noted if criminal charges result from the review of the Grand Jury, indictments are allegations.  The defendant charged is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
