The courtyard at the Culver-Union Township Public Library is getting a face-lift.
The majority of the work includes creating a better Main Street entrance into the library by incorporating ADA accessible elements to the building, according to Library Director Erin Lawrence.
Lawrence told MAX 98.3 FM News that a lot of the existing courtyard will be demolished to make way for those improvements. Demolition began Wednesday, April 7. She noted that the courtyard was looking like its age of 20 so it was time for an update.
The existing furniture will be replaced with new pieces, but decisions have not been made concerning the selection of furniture. Some type of year-round seating will be available once the majority of the construction is complete.
Lawrence said she and the staff are excited to see the updates and to beautify that part of the library.
The Main Street entrance will be closed during the process with the completion of the project in July. Until then, there is a secondary access at the library where patrons are able to enter and conduct business. The library is following the state’s mask advisory and officials there are not requiring residents to wear masks while inside the facility. There are no gathering limits at this time, but social distancing is encouraged.
The cost of the project is estimated at $135,000 with funds coming from a General Obligation Bond for work on Capital Projects. Thomas Excavating and Welding of Culver was the winning contractor for the Culver-Union Township courtyard renovation effort.
