USDA Extends Flexibilities for Free Meals for Children through September

The USDA is taking steps to make it easier for kids to keep getting free meals throughout the summer. Officials announced this week that a number of COVID-19-related waivers that were in place until the end of June have now been extended through September.

While the USDA typically partners with local schools and other organizations to offer free meals through the Summer Food Service Program, these waivers give distribution sites more flexibility when it comes to meal times. They also let parents and guardians pick up their kids’ meals, including bulk pickup for multiple days.

USDA-sponsored summer meals are available free of charge to those 18 and younger, as well adults enrolled in education programs for people with disabilities.
