A pursuit that began in Starke County and ended in Marshall County just after midnight Saturday resulted in the arrest of the driver.
A deputy from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department attempted to perform a traffic stop on U.S 30 at 12:42 a.m. Police say the driver of the vehicle did not stop and a pursuit began in the area of U.S. 30 and County Road 1100 East in Starke County.
The pursuit wandered into Marshall County through Plymouth and continued southbound on U.S. 31 where it finally ended on 11th Road. The driver reportedly hit a telephone pole which proceeded to fall on a police vehicle, injuring the officer. The driver the fled from the vehicle on foot, but was later apprehended by police, according to the report.
Charles Garrett, 32, of Fort Wayne was taken into custody on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, criminal recklessness and intimidation. Formal charges are pending through the Starke County Prosecutor’s Office. A passenger in the vehicle was apparently not charged in the incident.
The injured officer was treated and released from the Plymouth Hospital.
Two squad cars were reportedly damaged in the incident.
The Starke County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Hamlet Police Department, Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Bourbon Police Department, Plymouth Police Department, and Indiana State Police. Starke County Police say the Plymouth Fire Department responded quickly to the scene to assist an officer in need.
