State Health Commissioner Urges Worshipers to Keep Wearing Masks in Church for Now

State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box demonstrates how to put on a face mask during a COVID-19 briefing in 2020.

The idea of churches not requiring face masks is drawing concern from the state health commissioner. During Wednesday’s press conference, Dr. Kris Box noted that there may still be some high-risk individuals who haven’t been vaccinated yet.

“We know that shouting and singing can certainly spread respiratory droplets more, so I think we’re, just with 11 percent of our population vaccinated at this point, a little bit early to just take off our masks and throw caution to the wind,” she said. “I know it’s a lot more fun to praise and sing and worship with your mask off, and I think we’re really close to getting there but I’d just like to see us hold out a little longer.”

Governor Holcomb said no one’s suggesting that Hoosiers should stop worshiping, but he urged them to do it responsibly.
