Nearly $30 million was awarded to 18 communities and non-profit organizations in the state Thursday for 70 miles of new trail developments.
No potential local trail projects were awarded funds, but the City of Valparaiso will improve its Vale Park Road West Link Trail with 1.45 of new miles with grant funds totaling $364,500. The City of Crown Point was awarded nearly $3 million for 2.84 miles of the Veterans Memorial Trail/Pennsy Greenway Trail.
After a COVID-19 hiatus last year, Governor Holcomb stated in a press conference Thursday that the state is “trailblazing” its plan to improve connectivity in the Next Level Trails program. Another grant opportunity with $35 million in available funds will open in November.
Indiana Department of Natural Resources Director Dan Bortner indicated that the demand for trails is high and encourages entities to put together plans to connect Indiana with trail projects.
