State Health Officials Seeking Guidance on Easing Long-Term Care Visitation Restrictions

When long-term care facility visitation is able to get back to normal will depend on more federal guidance. Indiana Family and Social Services Administration Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dan Rusyniak says indoor visitation is currently allowed in facilities that haven’t had any new cases in the past 14 days, as long as the seven-day positivity rate is under 10 percent in the county.

“I think one of the big things that we’re waiting on is that social distancing part and whether or not vaccinations will change that,” Rusyniak said during last week’s COVID-19 press conference. “So certainly, we hear lots of comments from families who would really love to be able to hug their loved ones and hold their hands, but according to the CMS guidance right now, they’ve still got to follow those social distancing practices.”

Dr. Rusyniak said health officials from around the country bring up this issue on every call with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
