A four vehicle accident on U.S. 6 near Bremen Monday night claimed the life of one driver.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call of the collision at 5:14 p.m. Police say 33-year-old Melia Byrer, of Bremen, was traveling east on U.S. 6 in her 2007 Ford Focus when she stopped or slowed to make a north turn at the King Road intersection. A semi truck, driven by 57-year-old Delbert Polenski of Bancroft, Nebraska, collided with the rear of Byrer’s vehicle, according to the report. The force of the collision reportedly pushed Byrer’s vehicle into oncoming traffic. The car hit a 2017 Ford Focus driven by 50-year-old Jeffery Whiteman of Plymouth and a 1997 Subaru Legacy driven by 24-year-old Logan Powers of Plymouth.
Police say Byrer was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, but later died as a result of her injuries. The other drivers were treated at the scene of the accident.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by the Indiana State Police, Lapaz Fire Department, Lapaz EMS, Bremen Fire Department, Bremen EMS, and INDOT. The Indiana State Police and the Saint Joseph County Coroner’s Office are assisting in the ongoing investigation. Police say a final report of the accident is expected to be forwarded to the Marshall County Prosecutor for further review.
