The driver of a vehicle who reportedly led police on a pursuit through Marshall County and Starke County died as a result of an officer-involved shooting.
Indiana State Police say the driver of a red Chevrolet pickup truck committed a moving violation on U.S. 30 at Pioneer Road just before midnight on New Year’s Eve. A traffic stop was attempted, but the driver fled from police, according to the report.
Two officers from the Plymouth Police Department assisted the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department in a pursuit through Plymouth. During the pursuit, the driver allegedly swerved at several police vehicles.
The pursuit continued into Starke County where the driver ran over stop sticks at the intersection of East County Road North and East South Avenue. The vehicle continued down a dead-end section of road. The driver reportedly turned around toward oncoming police vehicles. The vehicle collided with two Plymouth Police Department squad cars and a Marshall County Sheriff’s Department vehicle, according to police.
Police say the officers got out of their vehicles and the driver allegedly drove toward the officers. Two deputies reportedly fired at the driver, hitting him at least once.
The driver was taken to a South Bend hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The Indiana State Police continues to investigate the incident. The names of the driver and police officers involved will be released at a later time.
Following the investigation, all information will be turned over to the Starke County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
