Even though funding provided with the approval of the Bremen Public School referendum does not arrive until 2021, school officials have made some changes to provide help to students and staff.
The referendum will allow Bremen Public Schools to raise taxes six cents per 100 dollars of assessed valuation to hire staff to assist with student health services including an additional nurse and student mental health support.
Bremen Public School Superintendent Dr. Jim White said two part-time nurses have agreed to step up to full-time to help during this time of uncertainty.
“I’m leveraging a cash balance to bridge us until that funding comes in the summer,” stated Dr. White. “We’re fortunate enough now to have to full-time nurses which makes such a difference with contact tracing and COVID. We will be posting in the spring for the mental health therapist and the additional Elementary/Middle School counselor.
When discussing the 2021 budget with the Bremen School Board this fall, Treasurer Stephanie Pittman said the referendum budget is around $350,000 for those services.
