More Health Care Professionals, College Students Needed for Reserve Workforces

Hoosiers continue signing up to fill critical roles in the fight against COVID-19. During Wednesday’s COVID-19 press conference, State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box reported that the health care and college student reserve workforces have added hundreds of members over the past few days.

“Last week, I told you that 4,300 Hoosiers responded to our Hoosier Healthcare Heroes: Call to Action survey and that nearly 250 college students had stepped up to serve,” Box said. “Today, those numbers have increased to nearly 4,900 Healthcare Heroes and more than 1,000 student volunteers.”

The Bowen Center will help connect the health care workers with long-term care facilities or local health departments in need of staff, while the students may also help in schools, COVID-19 testing sites, and other settings. There are also some remote work opportunities.

But Box said more workers are still needed, especially in rural areas. “If you’re a health care professional, a retiree, or a student with any capacity, please raise your hand. We need you.”
