The Marshall County Election Board members certified the 2020 General Election on Friday afternoon.
Eight signature verification statements were sent to voters as there were questions about matching signatures on their absentee ballots. Two voters responded within the 10-day deadline. The board members reviewed that paperwork and approved both ballots to be counted.
The board members also reviewed four provisional ballots of which one was counted. Two ballots were not completed correctly by a poll worker, and one voter was not registered to vote. The voter was registered at one time, but after years of voting inactivity purged the voter from the active registration list by the state.
In all, the results of three ballots were added to the General Election tallies in Marshall County.
Marshall County Clerk Deb VanDeMark noted last week that there were several absentee ballots surrendered at the polls because the voters were nervous about sending their ballots by mail. That is allowable by law. When the mail absentee ballots are surrendered to poll workers, the voter may cast their vote by machine.
VanDeMark praised the Post Office workers for their efforts during the election. She said the postal workers delivered mail to the Clerk’s Office twice prior to the deadline on Election Day to ensure those ballots would be counted. Only nine ballots were received beyond the deadline. Those ballots were not counted.
