The effort to put down a new gym floor at the John Glenn High School continues.
The maintenance department discovered a termite issue in portions of the floor prior to the end of last school year and the John Glenn School Board members previously voted unanimously to replace it at a cost of $145,860.
The board members were hopeful that portions of the gym floor could be salvaged so pieces could be given to members of the community, but Maintenance Director Shelby Gibson said the floor was nailed every eight inches into all of the 1X4 subflooring. He added that the mastic substance also made it very difficult to salvage any type of memorabilia of the floor to be displayed in the school or even offer portions to the public in a fundraising sale.
Superintendent Christopher Winchell provided an update to the board last week.
“The old floor has finally been totally removed,” stated Winchell. “It has been treated for the termite issue and they are in the process of putting the subfloor back in. The light upgrade in there has also been completed. We are still on track to have the floor done by December 1st.”
He hopes that the floor will be done even before December 1st so the varsity girls basketball team will get to play on the new floor. December 1st is the first varsity boys basketball game.
When the gym floor is complete, new ADA compliant bleachers will be installed.
