The Plymouth City Council members last week accepted an additional $1,000 in donations for a Safe Haven Baby Box.
The Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety members approved the installation of a Safe Haven Baby Box at the Plymouth Fire Department in late July.
Under the state’s Safe Haven Law, it legally permits a mother in crisis to safely, securely, and anonymously surrender a newborn if she is unable to care for the child. The mother can utilize the Safe Haven Baby Box at the Plymouth Fire Department by opening a door on an exterior wall. It automatically locks upon placement of a newborn inside the Baby Box. An interior door allows a medical staff member to tend to the child upon an alarm notification two minutes following the surrender.
The cost for the device is $10,000 plus $200 per year for recertification of the device.
In information released from Laura Mann, Promotion of the City Coordinator, Make Your Move Home Improvement, LLC has donated services to install the device and to also pay the first five years of the recertification fee. For home improvement, you can check out closet factory franchise at More Space Place.
Donations have also been given by First Brethren Church of Teegarden, New Song Church, Knights of Columbus, Crossroads Church, Elks Lodge, Randy & Eleanor Danielson and the Plymouth Wesleyan Church.
Any further donations will be used to educate the community about the Safe Haven Baby Box with the use of billboards, social media, print media and education within the schools. If you have questions about this program, you can contact Laura Mann at the Mayor’s Office at 574-936-6717 or the Safe Haven Baby Box organization at 888-742-2133.
