Gov. Holcomb Likely to Keep Mask Mandate for Foreseeable Future But Hopes to Avoid Stay-At-Home Restrictions

Hoosiers will likely be required to wear face masks for the foreseeable future, but Governor Holcomb is hesitant to reinstate stay-at-home restrictions, even as COVID-19 cases increase. During state officials’ press conference Wednesday, Indiana Department of Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lindsay Weaver noted that there are now twice as many Hoosiers hospitalized with COVID-19 than there were in late June or early July.

“This past week has seen the highest case numbers that Indiana has recorded during this pandemic and our health care system is reflecting that increase,” Weaver said. “We have seen an increase in the number of COVID patients requiring ICU beds and ventilators.”

But rather than bringing back statewide restrictions, Governor Holcomb said it’s important to look at where each community’s cases are coming from and focus on things like mask wearing, distancing, and good hygiene. “We have proof it works!” Holcomb said. “Look at our schools!”

Holcomb said the difference between now and March is that the state has the personal protective equipment available, as well as the capacity to care for COVID patients.
