Crews from Jackson Excavating will begin demolishing the old Triton Gym today.
The decision to tear down the 90-year-old building was made by the Triton School Board in May of this year after careful review of the costs to maintain the building. There was a lot of work that needed to be done to rehabilitate the gym for use that was estimated around $1 million.
An auction was held two weeks ago of items inside the building. While Superintendent Jeremy Riffle said the event was not intended to make any money for the school corporation, it did give community members a chance to come together to reminisce about times spent in the historic building while taking a piece of that history home.
Demolition is expected to begin today and take a couple of days to complete. Bricks will be available at the northwest corner of the parking lot for those interested in capturing an item for memorabilia.
