Bremen Public School Superintendent Dr. Jim White told the school board members at their meeting earlier this month that he has been attempting to educate the public on the referendum question on the November ballot.
The question reads, “For the eight (8) calendar years immediately following the holding of the referendum, shall the Bremen Public Schools impose a property tax rate that does not exceed six cents ($0.06) on each one hundred dollars ($100) of assessed valuation and that is in addition to all other property taxes imposed by the school corporation for the purpose of funding student health services including an additional nurse and student mental health support?”
Dr. White previously reported that the school is looking to hire mental health therapists, a counselor and another school nurse with the money generated from the referendum and believes it would in the best interest of the students. He said he has scheduled presentations with several community organizations to discuss the importance of the referendum. Several points on the importance of the referendum are also highlighted on the school corporation’s Facebook page.
If Bremen residents approve the referendum, the funds wouldn’t come to the school budget until 2021. The logistics of when those positions would be implemented would be considered by the end of the year.
