The downtown revitalization project in Bremen continues.
Haskins Underground finished all of the sewer work downtown and Walsh and Kelly crews are working on curbing.
Ken Jones from Engineering firm Jones Petrie and Rafinski said crews have uncovered several new issues since the asphalt was removed from Plymouth Street.
“We started looking at the condition of the manholes, which are brick manholes,” explained Jones. “We were concerned about the ability of those to be structurally sound when the new street went back in. So, working with Haskins Underground we came up with a plan to rehab those manholes without completely replacing them.”
He said complete replacement would have prolonged the project even further as the manholes are buried deep.
The cost of the manhole rehabilitation for four structures was $16,000. The Bremen Town Council members approved the change order with a unanimous vote.
Jones added that a second change order reduces the total contract price by $43,000 based on final quantities of bid items not needed. The second change order was also unanimously approved the council. Jones noted that the reduction brings the total cost of the project lower than the original contract price.
The project should be complete in mid-to-late November. The project includes the replacement sidewalks and curbs, and installation of new lighting and beautification efforts as part of the downtown revitalization project. The project is part of the county’s Regional Development Plan in the Regional Stellar Communities Initiative which will benefit from grant dollars from the Office of Community and Rural Affairs.
INDOT will repave the road when all other aspects are complete.
