State Health Commissioner Urges Flu Shots, Issues Standing Order for Other Vaccines

Indiana’s state health commissioner is once again urging Hoosiers to get their flu shot, as well as any other necessary vaccines. During Wednesday’s COVID-19 press conference, Dr. Kris Box said the flu can also lead to severe complications that require the use of intensive care beds and ventilators.

“While we have been fortunate not to overwhelm our health care system so far, flu season could be a game changer,” Box said. “So please, get a flu shot. It takes about two weeks for the shot to take full effect, so now is a perfect time to get your vaccine.”

Box announced that she’s taking steps to make it easier for Hoosiers to get any other vaccines they may need. “I’ll be issuing a standing order that allows pharmacists to administer to adults the vaccines that are recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices,” she explained. “This expands on the federal HHS directive that allows pharmacists to immunize children ages three to 18 and will help increase access to care in our state.”

Box noted that thousands of Hoosiers are diagnosed with the flu each year.
