Culver Community School Superintendent Karen Shuman updated the school board last week on two large grants received by the corporation.
She explained that one was a School Safety Grant.
“Each year we apply for the School Safety Grant that is provided by state funding,” Shuman said. “We received $100,000 to support our fencing project. We are putting up new fencing around our Elementary School and High School.
The fencing project was already awarded a bid in the amount of $367,000 and this grant will help offset that cost by $100,000.
The corporation was also the recipient of a Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund Grant that will go toward connectivity solutions.
“We’re partnering with Rochester Telephone Company to get fiber to four to six towers and then providing lower access towers in remote areas. The Tippecanoe River is one of our hard hit areas where people can’t get connectivity. We were awarded $321,000 to make that happen for our students. We’re in the process of getting those towers found so we can begin that process. If we ever have to go full virtual again, every student will have internet access.”
On a similar note, the board accepted donations for the high school volleyball and football programs, and at the elementary school. The National School Boards Association also provided a donation of masks and other interactive materials for students.
