The Marshall County Highway Department is using asphalt millings off of state highway projects to make a compound to pave a few county roads this summer.
Highway Superintendent Jason Peters said that the highway department is able to make its own recycled surfacing material at a reduced cost than getting hot mix asphalt from other companies. He is pleased with the outcome so far.
Peters said the material was used on a few residential areas and roads with lower speeds to start. He added that highway crews are trying different treatments to help maximize road funding dollars and add resurfacing miles to the road program. They have worked in the areas of Edwards Lane, Hibbard, Burr Oak, and roads in Donaldson.
In the meantime, Peters said the North Michigan Road project north of the roundabout in Plynouth is about a week away from completion. Walsh and Kelly crews should have the northbound shoulders done by Wednesday, approaches done by Thursday and the berms leveled and graded by the time the road is reopened on Monday, Aug. 17.
The side roads, or dead ends, off of North Michigan Road will be repaved using the asphalt millings from the road project.
