Students at Bremen Public Schools are back to in-person instruction.
Elementary/Middle School Principal Larry Yelaska thanked the Bremen School Board Wednesday night for allowing students to return to in-person instruction on Wednesday.
He told the board members there is a heavier traffic flow from last year as parents make the effort to drop off students at the school instead of riding the bus. Superintendent Dr. Jim White commented that vehicles were backed up on Bowen Avenue and beyond and hopes that the process will become smoother over the next week or so.
Yelaska added that there were a few glitches when it came to the virtual learning students, but he was happy that the first day of school was pretty seamless.
High School Principal Bruce Jennings said the start of the school year had a different feel as students had a socially distant way of welcoming friends and fellow students back to school. He noted it wasn’t the usual high-fives and hugs so it presented a different climate.
Jennings said he was impressed with the first day as it went smoothly and the teachers had confidence that the start of the year would be great with all of the hours put in to be proactive in light of COVID-19.
He believes if school had to be shut down again for any reason, teachers will have better tools to be able to provide improved virtual instruction.
School officials also appreciated two phone calls asking for guidance regarding procedures. One parent was unsure about sending a student to school because the parent had not received results of a COVID-19 test. It was determined that the student should remain at home. Another parent who either had a cold or suffered from allergies needed to pick up paperwork from the Elementary/Middle School and asked if a school employee could bring the paperwork out to the car to avoid going into the school. The paperwork was taken out to the car without any problems.
Yelaska commented that these measures are showing that people are doing what they can to make sure school stays in session.
