The U.S. Attorney’s Office and IRS Criminal Investigation representatives are warning residents to be aware of possible scam artists with the upcoming tax filing and payment deadline of July 15.
They say the IRS will not contact a person by phone, email, or social media to ask for personal information.
The COVID-19 pandemic pushed back the original filing deadline and tax payment due date to July 15.
In addition, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division has seen an increase in Economic Impact Payment scams and other financial schemes over the last few months. Taxpayers can report COVID-19 scams to the National Center for Disaster Fraud. Taxpayers can also report fraud or theft of their Economic Impact Payments to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). Unsolicited e-mails that appear to be from the IRS should be forwarded to phishing@irs.gov.
