The John Glenn School Board approved a price for new bleachers for the high school gym at their meeting this week.
Superintendent Christopher Winchell explained that since the gym floor had to be replaced due to termite damage, it made sense to replace the outdated bleachers at the same time. School officials worked with Barton Coe Vilamaa representatives in obtaining a quote.
“When we started working on this we were concerned that this project could have been anywhere from $5,000 to possibly even $700,000,” commented Winchell. “I’m excited to report that the bleachers and our gym floor were well under $400,000 on the total project. We’re going to have a great product in the end.”
The cost of the bleachers is $176,835 from the Larson Equipment and Furniture Company.
The removal of the bleachers was done by a local company for about $8,000.
In addition, Winchell commented that there will be new lighting in the gym.
“It’s going to have a dimmer switch and it’s going to have different switches so there will be opportunities where we will be able to light the floor but not necessarily light up the bleachers. That’s going to be a nice upgrade to go along with the rest of what we’re doing.”
The completion of the projects won’t be complete until October or November. Plans are being made to move volleyball matches to the North Liberty gym.
There will be an opportunity for fans to purchase a piece of the old gym floor. Winchell said there will be key pieces cut from the floor to keep at the school for nostalgia purposes.
