Bremen Downtown Project Underway

Drivers will need to maneuver around downtown Bremen as crews prepare the area for the downtown streetscape project.

State Road 106 (Plymouth Street) in Bremen between Montgomery Street and Washington Street will be closed for two months.  Crews from the Indiana Department of Transportation will be performing an underground water and sewer main replacement, and installing new drainage infrastructure.  Other utility work is also in the plan.

Following that project, it is the hope of the Bremen Town Council that the downtown streetscape project gets underway.

A public hearing was held Monday during the Bremen Town Council meeting as part of the process in obtaining the grant funding for the project that includes new sidewalks, curbs, lighting, and other beautification efforts in the downtown area.  INDOT plans to pave State Road 106 through the entire length of Bremen at the end of this project.

Grant writer Shannon McLeod from Priority Project Resources explained that the downtown streetscape project is within the Marshall County Crossroads Stellar Communities Initiative Regional Development Plan and while the grant funding has been set aside by officials from the Office of Community and Rural Affairs, the town still needs to apply for the grant to keep within the state’s process.

The estimated cost of the project is $1,325,759.   The Town of Bremen’s match for the project is $323,859.

Other than asking for specific details about the project, there were no public comments during the public hearing.

Another public hearing is planned for July 27.

Notification of a grant agreement should be made to the town this week.  The project will then go to bid with a bid opening set for Aug. 10.  A notice to proceed with the project would be made as soon as possible following the bid opening.
