A design change in the Hoham Drive project in Plymouth could be reimbursed if INDOT has the funds.
The overall project includes the widening of Hoham Drive from Michigan Street to a point 260 feet west of Western Avenue. This will allow for a 14-foot, two-way left turn west of Western Avenue and a dedicated eastbound right turn lane at Western Avenue. Curb, gutters and a sidewalk are a part of the project as well.
A discrepancy in the location of a retention pond has been in the discussion stage for several months. The initial placement later changed to where it would be placed on NIPSCO’s property on Hoham Drive as the flow couldn’t work with the first set of plans. The design company and NIPSCO have been working on a solution for the past several months.
Plymouth City Engineer Rick Gaul explained to the commission members last week that the cost estimate of an underground detention basin will be at least $150,000. The design change could be reimbursable, but INDOT needs to review funds for the rest of this year and next year to determine if that’s a possibility. Gaul said it’s likely that the city will need to pick up the full amount of that expense.
On top of that, the cost of the design change is $9,600. The commission members will need to review that expense at the next meeting in July.
The project is expected to begin in 2023.
