Triton School Board members said that it was a very difficult decision, but after many years of discussion they approved a quote this week to demolish the old gymnasium.
Superintendent Jeremy Riffle said the gym has been a very important part of the school corporation over the years, but the board had to make a decision on its future.
“I think we all love it and we all want to keep it, but in the end when we’re talking about fiscal responsibility and what that looks like for a school corporation to continue to pay $15,000 to $20,000 a year in utilities it doesn’t make a lot of sense. It’s not an easy decision, but it’s a recommendation none-the-less,” stated Riffle.
The school board members approved a demolition quote from Jackson Excavating in the amount of $85,000. Demolition is anticipated to begin during the fall break in October.
Asbestos removal is currently underway inside the old gymnasium. The work is being done by crews from Specialty Systems of South Bend.
Additionally, Riffle asked for the board’s approval to hold an auction on the contents inside the gymnasium. He was in contact with several auctioneers who determined that an auction is worthy.
He commented, “It’s needed in our community to be able to purchase some of those items if they so wish. So, that’s going to take place in August or September, providing that’s approved.”
The board unanimously approved a motion to move forward with an auction. A date will be finalized in the coming weeks.
