Bremen School Board Moves Forward with Referendum Process

The Bremen Public School Board members agreed last week to move forward with a referendum for the November General Election.

Superintendent Dr. Jim White stated the residents in Bremen will be asked to increase property taxes up to $300,000 for eight years in order to add key positions at the school corporation.  A school nurse would be added which would create two nurses on staff to help all of the students.  A mental health therapist would be included as well as a behavioral health specialist, and another guidance counselor.

The board members discussed the need for those positions even more now with the health pandemic.  Elementary/Middle School Principal Larry Yelaska and High School Principal Bruce Jennings agreed that the students would greatly benefit by having these people on staff.

If residents approve the referendum, the funds wouldn’t come to the school budget until 2021.  The logistics of when those positions would be implemented would be considered by the end of the year.

Dr. White and the school’s attorney will be filing the necessary paperwork with the Marshall County Clerk’s Office to move the process along in order to be placed on the November ballot.
