Officials from the Marshall County Health Department announced Wednesday afternoon that the first positive case of COVID-19 was diagnosed in Marshall County.
They say they are working closely with the local and state officials to ensure that contacts of the patient are identified and monitored and all infection control protocols are followed.
The patient is self-isolating at home and the Health Department will not release additional information about the patient due to privacy laws.
COVID-19 is most commonly spread from an infected person through respiratory droplets released into the air by coughing and sneezing, close personal contact such as shaking hands or touching hands, touching an object or surface with the virus then touching the face without washing hands, and rarely though fecal contamination.
The Marshall County Health Department stresses the need for social distancing, washing hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or longer, avoid touching the face, cover coughs and sneezes in a tissue or elbow, clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces, and staying home when a person is ill.
