INDOT Commissioner Addresses Travel Impact, Revenue

INDOT Commissioner Joe McGuinness addressed travel impacts and revenue issues in a Friday press conference at the Statehouse as residents stay home during a governor’s order in response to slow the spread of COVID-19.

He commented that changes in traffic and fuel purchasing will have a direct effect on revenue for local roads and streets.

“We know that it will have an impact on road maintenance and construction for INDOT and for local communities,” said McGuinness.  “In fact, we have been collecting traffic volume data each day and comparing it to the week of March 2 through March 8.  On March 26, we saw a reduction of 41 percent of all combined vehicle traffic that includes 45 percent reduction in light vehicles on our state highways.  Those are the sedans, minvans and passenger vehicles.”

He said the state will continue to use funding as effectively as possible.

“We’ll also work closely with our federal partners at the United States Department of Transportation to make sure we are maximizing any federal dollars and resources that may be available to transportation as we manage this over the long term.”
