An emergency plan is in place at the Culver Community School Corporation when it comes to the coronavirus.
Culver School Board member Ken VanDePutte asked Middle/High School Principal Brett Berndt and Elementary Principal Erin Proskey if a plan is in place. Berndt commented that there is a plan in place with the school nurse. Proskey added that the CDC and the Department of Education are sending out information daily to keep administrators informed about the coronavirus and other issues.
Superintendent Karen Shuman stated that there are practices in place to prevent the spread of illness.
“We are having certain classes where we’re asking students to go wash your hands right now if you haven’t washed your hands today, which is one of the bigger things they’re promoting,” stated Shuman. “And we’re also stressing the fact that if you think you’ve been exposed don’t come to school.”
Supplies such as hand sanitizer and surgical–type face masks are in high demand and are now difficult to get.
Shuman said the Culver Academies are not allowing students to go overseas during spring break. If they do go overseas, Shuman said they would have to be quarantined for two weeks when they return.
As for general health of students, School Board member Jack Jones asked if there has been a sudden drop or major fluctuations in attendance. At the most, Shuman indicated that three teachers were out of school on one day due to illness, but it has not caused the corporation to close for that purpose. Middle/High School Principal Brett Berndt said there hasn’t been a concern.
