Plymouth School Corporation to Add Elementary School Counselors

Thanks to changes in federal guidelines for Title grants, the Plymouth Community School Corporation is able to add two counselors at the Elementary Schools with funding from State and Title Grants.

Superintendent Andy Hartley asked the school board members for permission Tuesday night to hire two certified elementary school counselors.

“It will allow our elementary schools to have each their own counselor instead of two that we currently have being split between the schools,” explained Hartley.

Hartley added that this has been in the works for some time as it was included in a referendum that failed last May.

Hartley said, “The referendum certainly would have provided us a longer term sustainable piece, but I feel confident in this too.  Whenever you fund positions through grants things could happen and I don’t say that to create uncertainty about it, but it’s a reality.  But the need is certainly there.  We found the funding for it and I feel good about being able to work on sustaining it.”

School Board member Larry Pinkerton commended those working diligently to making this a reality.

“I’m elated that we’re going to be able to have a counselor at each elementary school.  With all of the mental health problems and everything that they deal with it’s going to be a tremendous asset not only to the school but to the parents and the kids,” stated Pinkerton.

The request to hire the counselors passed with a unanimous vote of the school board.
