Bremen Town Council Considers Allowing Students as Non-Voting Council Members

The Bremen Town Council agreed to consider allowing students to be non-voting members of the council under a few guidelines.

Bremen Town Council President Bill Daily said Bremen High School Principal Bruce Jennings put forth the request.  The students would sit with the council, but have no voting powers. It would just act as a learning experience.

The school will interview and select the students to “serve” on the council.

Town Council member Michael Leman said the Bremen students who participated in the Stellar process showed how much they are involved in government already and it would be a good experience for the students.

Town Attorney Anthony Wagner said there needs to be a clear understanding that the students would not be included in executive session meetings due to the sensitivity of material in those meetings which aren’t typically open to the public.  He would also want to include social media conduct in an agreement with the school.

“If they’re on Twitter or whatever, I don’t want them slagging the town.  They just need to be mindful of what they say and how they say it,” cautioned Wagner.

Park Superintendent Brian Main said students would be on the park board as well.  Other government entities would include the school board, the library board, Historical Society, and others.

Daily said he’d speak with the principal to put together some ideas to put in the guidelines.
