Plymouth School Board Allows Old Lincoln Jr. High School Project to be Bid Out

The Plymouth School Board authorized officials to bid out the old Lincoln Junior High School demolition and renovation project when members met for their first meeting of the year.

Before reaching a decision about bidding it out, Superintendent Andy Hartley informed members that those working on the project are reaching the end of the design phase.

He showed the board a rendering created by Barton-Coe-Vilamaa that displayed a general idea of what the old building will look like after the project and shared what it will entail.

He noted, “After we demo up to the auditorium, we’ll cap that off and add in some stairwells and an entrance.”

Superintendent Hartley emphasized that they are hoping to remove a portion of wall that reads ‘Centennial Auditorium’ so it can be incorporated into a sign that will be placed in front of the building.

Project Manager Derek Anderson from Skillman Construction provided the board with a tentative timeline, noting that bids will go out at the start of February and will be opened toward the end of the month. He added that he will review them and come before the board with a contract recommendation during their March meeting.

Anderson noted that this proposed timeline will put the school at an advantage and give contractors plenty of time to prepare.

He explained, “That way we’re starting earlier, getting bids earlier. It’s a good time of year, not a lot of stuff is on the books yet. That will allow everybody to order materials and get things in place so when school gets out and the building is empty, we’re ready to roll.”

He added, “This is a big demo project, don’t be surprised if we see some people from pretty far away bidding this one.”

Anderson mentioned that this is a fairly unique project since crews won’t be demolishing the whole building and it will require some careful attention to detail when it comes to keeping the remainder of the structure intact.

In addition to authorizing that project to be bid out, the board also received an update about the progress that’s been made at the new Lincoln Junior High School Building.
