A proposed intergovernmental agreement between the Triton School Corporation and the Bourbon Police Department was recently discussed with Town Council and School Board members.
During their January meeting, Triton Superintendent Jeremy Riffle addressed Bourbon PD a few times. While discussing the core value of continuous improvement, he thanked the Department for their on-going partnership and their willingness to work with the school corporation.
He touched on it again discussing the value of accountability, stating that the intention of the intergovernmental agreement is to allow local law-enforcement to have jurisdiction on Triton’s campus in order to improve safety for pedestrians and scholars.
The Town’s clerk-treasurer Kim Berger noted that the agreement will authorize Bourbon officers to conduct enforcement on Triton’s campus for things like speeding on school grounds and improper parking.
She explained, “Before, being that that was private property, the Police Department could not enforce that. Now, they’re wanting those type of things to be enforced on their property.”
Bourbon’s new Town Attorney Alex Hoover also brought the agreement up when the Town Council met for their first meeting of the year. He explained that he has been coordinating with the School’s attorney and is expecting a draft agreement to be sent over for review.
