In an update of items discussed at a recent Indiana Election Conference in December, Marshall County Clerk Deb VanDeMark stressed to the Election Board members that a security protocol needs to be put in place.
VanDeMark stressed that the Election Board is diligent in keeping all elections secure by following the guidelines of the Indiana Election Division, but a protocol needs to be put in place.
The protocol will set out measures needed to ensure elections are secure.
“Each county Election Board must have a security protocol to secure its voting system and poll books which must contain an audit trail to detect unauthorized access to the systems of the poll books. The security protocol must be adopted by a unanimous vote of the entire board. If the county Election Board has not adopted a security protocol, then the board must use a statutory security method,” explained VanDeMark.
She noted that it’s also a way to be transparent with the public about what the Marshall County Election Board is doing to ensure that all elections are secure.
Election Board President Sean Surrisi asked if a deadline was placed on the requirement. VanDeMark responded saying that she’d check Indiana code regarding that inquiry.
A protocol will be presented for board review in a future meeting.
