DNR Accepting Lake and River Enhancement, Recreational Trails Grant Applications

The state is now accepting grant applications for projects aimed at improving waterways, as well as trail development. Applications for Lake and River Enhancement grants are due to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources by January 15.

The program aims to improve water quality by addressing the flow of sediments and nutrients, enhancing wildlife habitats in the process. Eligible projects include logjam removal, bank stabilization, and wetland creation. The DNR awarded more than $1.2 million in LARE grants last year, with Lake Maxinkuckee and Bass Lake among the recipients.

Meanwhile, the deadline to apply for Recreational Trails Program grants is March 1. Local governments and nonprofit organizations may request between $50,000 and $250,000 for trail development.

Specifically, that money may be used for construction, property acquisition, support facilities like parking and signage, and stream and river access sites. Applicants must provide a 20 percent match.
