Pickup Truck Driver Reportedly Tells Police He Was Looking in Center Console before Hitting Buggy

Marshall County Police have released more details surrounding Tuesday afternoon’s fatal pickup truck versus buggy crash. LeRoy Hochstetler, 80, of Bremen, was killed, when the buggy he was driving was reportedly hit from behind by a pickup truck on 3B Road.

Officers say the driver of the 2016 Ram 2500, Marion Otto, 19, also of Bremen, told them he was looking in the truck’s center console and didn’t see the buggy. It was apparently at that point when he realized he’d hit something, and he looked up and saw a glare from the sun. Otto said that once he stopped, he noticed he’d struck a buggy and immediately called 911.

Police say Otto fully cooperated, and a chemical test revealed that drugs and alcohol were not factors. The Bremen Police and Fire departments, Lutheran EMS, and the Marshall County Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene.
