No Bremen Teachers Rated with ‘Needs Improvement’ or as ‘Ineffective’

Bremen Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jim White presented information about teacher evaluations when school board members met last week.

He explained, “Essentially, across our district around 80 percent are highly effective and 20 percent are effective and over the past year we had no needs improvement or ineffective.

The superintendent explained that while it is a state-mandated requirement to evaluate teachers, corporations have some freedom when it comes to how they conduct them.

He noted, “By law, you have to evaluate teachers annually but the method varies from district to district and we’re using a product called McREL.”

Dr. White elaborated on why that method of evaluation was chosen.

He stated, “The reason it was selected years ago, prior to me, is because it’s kind of more instructional based. It’s a little bit less about ‘okay teacher, you’re doing this and you should be doing x.’ It’s more about looking at instruction and having deep conversations about the type of instruction that’s happening with in the classroom.”

Dr. White noted that presenting the evaluation data to the school board is an annual requirement.
