Student Resource Officers are now present at Triton Community Schools thanks to the collective efforts of officials from the school, town and police department as well as funding from state’s Secured School Safety Grant.
Superintendent Jeremy Riffle reports that school board members approved a Memorandum of Understanding related to the Student Resource Officer position when they met for their November meeting.
Riffle indicated that they’re implementing the position a little differently then most other schools.
He explained, “It’s not one, there’s approximately six officers that will share that duty. The gentlemen that are not on their shift actually cover that on an off-shift time. So they actually sign up for that each day of the month.”
Superintendent Jeremy Riffle elaborated on everything that was covered with the Secured School Safety Grant funding which was provided through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.
Riffle mentioned, “Part of that money went to the new bus cameras that will be installed over Christmas break and then the remainder of that, which I think ends up being about $20,000, will go toward those Resource Officers. It will go to the Town for their services each day.”
The Secured School Safety Grant awarded to Triton totaled $50,000. Riffle mentioned that the grant required a 25 percent local match. He noted that since the police officers coming to work in the school counted toward an in-kind contribution no additional funds had to be put toward the match.
The Bourbon Police Officers began serving at Triton on Wednesday, November 13th.
