Marshall County Treasurer Angie Birchmeier presented several documents to the county commissioners Monday morning that deal with new legislation concerning the disclosure of the innkeepers tax.
“There has been a change at the state allowing us to enter into an agreement with local tourism so they can help oversee the hotels here in the county,” said Birchmeier.
Birchmeier said the county and Marshall County Tourism will share more information about how the tax is handled when the information was once confidential.
“This would allow them to know who is making what payments and making sure the hotels are keeping up with compliance.”
Another disclosure agreement would pertain to the Department of Revenue.
“Marketplace facilitators like Airbnb, Vrbo, and HomeAway now have to collect innkeepers. That money is collected and remitted directly to the State Department of Revenue and then deposited into our account.”
She noted that the county has already received money, but without the agreement in place they have no further information about where the money came from.
The commissioners unanimously approved the documents as presented.
