The daily rate that will be charged to house Marshall County inmates in the Elkhart County Jail to help alleviate overcrowding has been officially established.
As previously reported, when the Marshall County commissioners met this week, it was noted that the rate had not been specified in the amended agreement that was submitted by Elkhart officials.
Friday afternoon, County Attorney James Clevenger issued an update, noting that the agreement between the Marshall County Commissioners and Sheriff with the Elkhart County Commissioners and Sheriff calls for a payment of $40.00 per day to house inmates.
He explained that was the rate that was originally contemplated by the Marshall County Commissioners and the Sheriff when the proposed inmate housing agreement was first sent to Elkhart County.
Clevenger added that Elkhart County officials are agreeable to taking a number of Marshall County’s inmates but the exact number is still being determined.
As of Monday’s Commissioner’s meeting, the jail population was about 60 inmates over the recommended capacity of 239.
