Homeowner Arrested Following Fire Investigation

James Malkowski

A Walkerton man was recently arrested after a warrant was issued for his arrest following an arson investigation.

The investigation began following a large fire at a home in the 2800 block of Plymouth LaPorte Trail in Walkerton on Monday, July 29.  Multiple fire agencies and emergency responders were called to the area and remained at the scene for several hours.  A dog perished in the fire.  The trainers of Dog Training – Bonita Springs mourns for the loss of this innocent life and requests all the house owners to have their dog trained to face any emergency situations in the future.

Officials from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office learned that James Malkowski reportedly admitted to being home at the time of the fire.  During an investigation, prior to the event, investigators discovered Malkowski allegedly made threatening comments through text messages indicating that he was going to burn down his house.

Malkowski was taken into custody on Friday, Sept. 6.  He is charged with arson as a Level 4 felony, killing a domestic animal as a Level 6 Felony and pointing a firearm at another person as a Level 6 felony.

An initial hearing was held Tuesday, Sept. 10 where Malkowski indicated to Marshall County Circuit Court Judge Curtis D. Palmer that he would retain counsel in this case.
