Elkhart Man Charged with Rape, Robbery, Following Alleged Attack at Rural Bremen Home

An Elkhart man faces multiple charges, after police say he tricked a Marshall County woman into letting him into her home, robbed her, and raped her in front of her two-year-old child. The incident allegedly happened the morning of August 28 at a home on Tyler Road near Bremen, according to a probable cause affidavit shared by the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office.

The woman reportedly told officers that she was alone with her child when an unknown red vehicle pulled into the driveway; then a man knocked on the door and asked for directions. He reportedly asked her to write them down, and when she went to hand him the paper, he allegedly grabbed her, placed a knife to her throat, demanded money, and took cash from her.

The man then allegedly restrained the woman with zip ties that he brought with him and raped her in the presence of her child. Once he left, the woman reportedly freed herself and sought assistance.

Police shared a description of the suspect with surrounding agencies, and Elkhart County Police identified him as Michael Kevin Middaugh, 49. He was soon apprehended by authorities in Elkhart county on a warrant for failure to register as a sex offender, according to Marshall County Prosecutor Nelson Chipman.

Chipman says Middaugh is being charged with three counts of rape, one count of burglary while armed with a deadly weapon, one count of robbery, and one count of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon. In a press release Thursday, Chipman praised the detectives for the speed at which they were able to make an arrest.
