A recent Stop Arm Violation Enforcement (SAVE) effort by the Culver Police Department and La Porte County Sheriff’s Department yielded several reports.
The project, implemented through the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, allowed officers to work extra patrols by following school buses during routes before and after school. During the enforcement period, officers looked for motorists who disregarded the school bus stop arm and erratic driving around school bus routes.
The Culver Police Department reported one vehicle passed through an intersection at a high rate of speed while a bus was stopped at an intersection yielding to thru traffic. The driver was issued a citation for speed. One report of a school bus stop arm violation was forwarded to the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
The La Porte County Sheriff’s Department reported 3 officers working a total of 24 hours issued 32 citations and 54 warnings during the SAVE enforcement period. Citations were issued for disregarding a traffic control device/stop sign, exceeding the posted speed limit, no seatbelt, and driving while suspended.
During the same time, both departments participated in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilization which resulted in several citations and warnings.
