The City of Plymouth kicked off Blueberry Festival weekend on a great note by receiving some exciting news this morning.

Community members and local leaders gathered in the City Council Chambers and listened eagerly as Brock Hesler, Vice President of Membership and Foundation Relations for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, shared an important announcement.

Hessler explained, “Each November, the Chamber celebrates business and community excellence with an annual awards dinner. Four honors are presented; Business Leader of the Year, Government Leader of the Year and Dynamic Leader of the Year.”

He continued, “The fourth award is the Community of the Year honor which I am proud to officially announce today is coming to Plymouth for the first time in the 30 year history of our awards event.”

Plymouth City Attorney Sean Surrisi and Reese Theater Project Co-Chair Randy Danielson were commended for the work they put into submitting the application that allowed Plymouth to be considered for this distinction.

Individuals who have played a key role in the City’s growth and prosperity over the years spoke during the event, including Mayor Mark Senter, long-time community advocate Attorney Harold “Sonny” Wyland, namesake for the Indiana Chamber’s Volunteer of the Year Award and President of Plymouth Foundry Samuel Schlosser, MCEDC President and CEO Jerry Chavez and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Connie Holzwart.

Once the announcement was made, Mayor Senter commented on the City’s slogan: “Where Community and Possibilities Connect”.

He shared, “I think it sums us up pretty well. We come together, help each other out and make things happen. We’re always moving forward, we’re always evolving, imaging what’s next. That creates an energy and environment where people and businesses can thrive.”

However, officials note that phrase is more than just a slogan; it has led to collaborative partnerships, significant projects and a special buzz about the city that captured the attention of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and earned Plymouth this recognition.

Additional details from the event will be shared in future articles and the entire announcement will be featured on our station’s Maximum Impact Program at noon on Sunday, September 8th.
