The future of the Old Gym on the campus of the Triton School Corporation will be discussed during a community meeting tonight at 6 p.m.
In a Triton Trojan Spotlight video, Superintendent Jeremy Riffle, Athletic Director Mason McIntyre and Director of Indiana Landmarks’ Northern Regional Office Todd Zeiger discussed the significance of the structure.
While it may be in need of repairs, the Old Gym, which has also been referred to as the ‘Bourbon Community Building’, has managed to stand the test of time for more than 90 years.
Tonight’s meeting will be held in the Old Gym and community members are invited to share memories about the structure and to offer their input about moving forward.
Director McIntyre mentioned that about 6 to 7 years ago, a group of residents concerned about the structure maintaining its iconic status started a non-profit organization entitled “Friends of the Old Gym”.
He added that Zeiger has been involved in the group from the beginning and played a major role in helping the building be named a historic landmark.
Superintendent Riffle indicated that the Spotlight video was made to help inform the community that the building is being discussed and to quash any inaccurate rumors that may be floating around.
He said the Old Gym has been brought up in past board meetings and will continue to be addressed in the future. Riffle added that school officials will work to be as open and transparent as possible throughout the entire process.
