Selling old MacBooks and iPads should bring in about $700,000 for the Plymouth Community School Corporation. Last week, the school board accepted a bid for surplus computers from Total Technology Results.
Chief Tech Officer Bruce Johnson said the company offered a guaranteed minimum of about $697,000 for an estimated 3,000 MacBooks and 600 iPads, although the actual number of devices may vary. Similarly, the final purchase price may be higher, depending on their condition. Johnson said that price is a lot more than he expected, and he credited students and staff for taking good care of the devices.
He noted that another company, Secure Recycling, actually offered a substantially higher minimum bid, but was removed from consideration after it was learned that other school districts have had trouble with them. Specifically, School Corporation Attorney Jeff Houin pointed to one documented instance of a falsified certification document in a bid and, in another case, a bounced check.
The Plymouth Community School Corporation received a total of 11 bids for its surplus computers.
