A man was struck by lightning Saturday night while attempting to get to shore in a boat on the Lake of Woods in Bremen.
Marshall County Coroner John Grolich says 65-year-old Richard Eberhardt and another passenger were on a pontoon boat in the lake when a strong storm arrived in the area. They reportedly saw several lightning strikes and headed to shore. As they were making their way to shore, a bolt of lightning stuck Eberhardt who collapsed.
Officials say CPR was performed as emergency personnel were called to the scene. Additional efforts by Lutheran EMS personnel and the Bremen Fire Department were not successful. Grolich said Eberhardt was pronounced dead at the scene.
The passenger in the boat was not injured.
An autopsy is scheduled and the investigation continues by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Marshall County Coroner’s Office.
