Working residents who may not get the chance to go to the food pantry to pick up needed items will have another chance to get necessities.
Rebecca Palmer of Caring Cupboards asked permission from the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety members Monday night to place food bins outside the Plymouth Fire Department and the Plymouth Police Department. Palmer described the bins as an “emergency food pantry” for those in need that can be accessed at all times.
“Sometimes you just need something to get you through the night until you get your paycheck,” stated Palmer. “Also, if you’re receiving food stamps, you’re not able to get the cleaning products or the pet products, and sometimes you just can’t make it to the food pantries because you’re working.”
The bins would be stocked with canned meats, tuna pouches, canned fruits, instant potatoes, ready-to-eat soups, cleaning products, pet food, baby wipes, diapers, and cleaning wipes.
Palmer said the caring cupboard is to be used to select one or two items that are needed.
She stressed that the bins will be monitored to check the stock and for any misuse. If vandalism or other malicious action occurs, the caring cupboard will be removed.
It was suggested by the board members that the situation be evaluated in 60 days with a progress report given to the board members following that trial period. With that, the board members unanimously approved a motion to approve the request.
Food items to be placed in the bins can be dropped off at the MAX 98.3 FM studios at 215 N. Michigan Street in Plymouth.
